Sora’s Story

“My parents divorced when I was very young, and my siblings and I grew up with our grandparents. In my hometown, trafficking is common, so I lived in fear—always careful at school, never daring to provoke anyone.

At 15, I had to leave school because of financial hardship. That’s when I met a boyfriend who I later realized was a pimp. I became one of the girls he managed. After getting sick, I knew I had to escape.

I worked as a waitress in another city and was praised for my hard work. But loneliness led me back to people from my hometown, and soon I was trapped again—moving from bar to bar, living in constant fear and pain.

At the end of 2024, I reconnected with a classmate from junior high. She told me she was working at Starfish Project, where women like us were given safe jobs and the chance to study again. At first, I was afraid it wasn’t true. But after being abused again and completely exhausted by exploitation, I called her.

In May 2025, I walked through the doors of Starfish Project. For the first time, I felt love and acceptance. I joined the team, moved into the shelter, and started classes in literacy, math, and computer skills. In the evenings, we cook, watch movies, and build friendships.

Now, I wake up every day with happiness and motivation. For the first time, I’m looking forward to my future.”
