How to Layer Necklaces: A Simple Guide to Mixing Gold, Color & Texture

I almost always layer my necklaces.

So many necklaces, so little time. 😂

I usually start with the gold snake necklace I wear all the time. (I had it a year before launch– I know a gal!) Then, depending on what I'm wearing, I'll add one or two more.

Today, for example, I'm wearing my everyday gold necklace with a bold, colorful stone necklace over a cozy fall sweater. The gold gives me a little shine, while the beaded necklace adds color, texture, and a little personality.

And that's really what I love about layering necklaces.

You don't have to choose just one.

You can mix delicate and bold. Gold and color. Chains and beads. Simple and statement-making. The trick is figuring out how to make all those pieces work together.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to layer necklaces.

Start With Your Everyday Necklace

If you're new to layering necklaces, don't overthink it.

Start with the necklace you already love wearing.

Maybe it's a simple gold chain. Maybe it's a pendant your best friend gave you. Maybe it's the necklace you haven't taken off in three years. (You know the one.)

That becomes your starting point.

Then add another necklace that brings something different to the look.

I usually think about three things:

Length. Texture. Color.

If my first necklace is simple and gold, I might add a colorful beaded necklace. If I'm wearing a delicate pendant, I might pair it with a thicker chain.

The goal isn't for every necklace to match perfectly. It's for them to work together.

How Many Necklaces Should You Layer?

My answer?

As many as you want.

I regularly layer two, three, and sometimes four necklaces, especially with a V-neck or scoop-neck top.

For a more subtle look, two necklaces can be perfect.

For a little more drama, try three.

And if you're wearing a simple neckline and really want to have some fun with your jewelry, go for four.

There isn't a magic number. The key is giving each necklace enough space to be seen.

Use Different Lengths

This is probably the easiest trick for creating a layered look that actually looks intentional.

Instead of putting four necklaces at almost exactly the same length, spread them out.

A shorter necklace can sit close to your collarbone. A second can fall a little lower. Then add a longer pendant or beaded necklace.

And this is one reason I love Starfish Project necklaces for layering: they are all adjustable.

Instead of being stuck with one length, you can move the necklace up or down depending on what you're wearing and what you're layering it with.

For example, the Guiding Lights Necklace can be worn from 16–18 inches, while the Orion's Beacon Necklace is designed at a longer 18–20 inches. That extra length makes Orion's Beacon especially easy to layer with shorter necklaces.

My Favorite Trick: Mix Gold With Color

This is probably my favorite way to layer necklaces.

If you're wearing a simple gold necklace, add a necklace with color.

It doesn't have to be complicated. A colorful beaded necklace over a neutral sweater can completely change the look.

I love the contrast of warm gold with turquoise, blue, green, or other colorful stones and beads.

The gold gives you that classic shine.

The color gives your outfit personality.

And suddenly a simple sweater and jeans look a little more interesting and put together.

For example, the Seabreeze Strand Necklace is hand-beaded with turquoise and hematite accents and is adjustable at 19–21 inches, making it a great longer layer over a shorter gold necklace.

Don't Be Afraid to Mix Textures

This is another place where layering gets fun.

You don't need four delicate chains.

In fact, I think layering looks more interesting when the necklaces aren't all the same.

Try pairing:

Think of your necklaces the way you might think about putting together an outfit.

You wouldn't necessarily wear four identical sweaters at once.

So don't make your necklaces do that either.

Give them different jobs.

How to Layer Necklaces With a V-Neck

V-necks are practically made for layered necklaces.

I like to use the shape of the neckline as a guide.

Start with a shorter necklace near the collarbone, then add longer pieces that follow the V shape of the shirt.

You can keep the whole look delicate with several gold chains, or add a larger pendant or colorful beaded necklace for more contrast.

If I'm wearing a V-neck, this is when I might go for three or even four layers.

How to Layer Necklaces With a Scoop Neck

A scoop neck gives you a little more room to play.

Try starting with a short necklace and then adding two or three longer layers.

This is also a great opportunity to mix shapes and textures because the open neckline gives your necklaces plenty of space to show up.

And if your top is a solid neutral color?

Even better.

That's your excuse to bring in a little color.

My Current Layering Favorite: Orion's Beacon

I have a new favorite necklace for layering: the Orion's Beacon Necklace.

It was designed a little longer than many of our necklaces at 18–20 inches, and it comes in both gold and silver. The solid chain has enough presence to hold its own, but it's simple enough to work with other pieces.

I've been wearing the gold version with other gold chains, but I especially love it with a bigger beaded necklace.

It's becoming one of those pieces I reach for when I want my jewelry to look intentional without having to think too hard about it.

And honestly, those are my favorite pieces.

The ones you can just put on and know they'll work.

Three Easy Necklace-Layering Formulas

If you want to try layering but aren't sure where to start, here are three combinations I'd try.

1. The Everyday Layer

Delicate gold chain + simple pendant

Easy. Classic. Works with almost everything.

Perfect for jeans and a T-shirt, a sweater, or your everyday work outfit.

2. The Gold + Color Layer

Everyday gold necklace + longer colorful beaded necklace

This is my personal favorite.

The gold adds shine, while the beads bring in color and texture.

Try this one over a simple sweater or solid-colored top.

3. The More-Is-More Layer

Short gold necklace + medium chain + pendant + bold beaded necklace

This is for the days when you don't feel like choosing.

And I fully support those days.

Use different lengths and textures so every piece gets its moment.

How to Layer Necklaces Without Tangling

Okay, we do need to talk about the annoying part.

Because beautiful layered necklaces are wonderful.

A giant knot of necklaces that somehow became one impossible piece of jewelry?

Not so wonderful.

The good news is that a few simple tricks can help.

Choose different lengths. If every necklace sits at exactly the same spot, they're more likely to tangle.

Mix textures and weights. A heavier pendant or beaded necklace can help create separation between finer chains.

Don't stack all your pendants in the same place. Give them some breathing room.

Adjust your necklaces before you leave the house. Especially with adjustable necklaces, take a minute to position each layer where you want it.

And if you're still having trouble, a layering clasp can help keep multiple necklaces separated.

The Best Part of Layering? More Impact.

There really isn't one “right” way to layer necklaces.

That's the fun of it.

Start with the pieces you already love. Add different lengths. Mix textures. Bring in some color. Try gold with silver if that's your thing. Wear two necklaces one day and four the next.

Your jewelry doesn't have to match perfectly.

It just has to feel like you.

And here's something I love about layering Starfish Project necklaces: when you add another piece, you're adding another opportunity to make an impact.

Two necklaces? More impact.

Three necklaces? Even more.

You're not just building a jewelry collection—you’re choosing pieces that help fund our mission of creating safe employment and opportunities for survivors of exploitation.

So go ahead.

Wear the necklace you always wear.

Add another.

Then maybe one more.

So many necklaces, so little time—and so many opportunities to Wear Hope. Give Hope.
