What is Gold-Plated Jewelry?

At Starfish Project, our jewelry is created with high-quality 14K and 18K gold plated jewelry. First off, what is gold-plated jewelry? Gold-plated jewelry is made from a base metal like brass or stainless steel, and has been covered with a thin layer of real gold. Our jewelry is created with gold-plated materials that are run through an ionic plating process.

What is an Ionic Plating Process?

This process gives jewelry a beautiful and durable finish. The ionic plating process is one of the best processes in the industry to prioritize sustainability and workers' safety!

For You:

A durable, long-lasting finish that won’t tarnish easily.

For Our Workers:

A safe environment that eliminates exposure to harsh manufacturing chemicals.

For the Planet:

A clean, sustainable process that produces zero toxic wastewater.

Here at Starfish Project, we believe in safe working conditions and a more sustainable world.

What is the Difference Between 14K and 18K Gold Plating?

Whether a piece is plated in 14K or 18K gold holds some differences, but this mainly refers to type of gold that is used for outer plating.

14K Gold is made up with 58% of pure gold. It is far more durable, has a better scratch resistance, it's less expensive, and most importantly, it's excellent for everyday wear. Overall, it is highly valued because it is durable, yet affordable.

How do You Care for Gold-Plated Jewelry?

The better care that is taken of the jewelry, the longer the wear! There are several things you can do to make sure your gold-plated jewelry lasts for years.

First, put it on last. Apply any perfume, lotion, makeup, or hairspray before finishing off the look with your gold-plated piece.

Second, keep it away from water. Avoid activities like swimming, showering, or washing dishes with our quality pieces. Especially avoid water with harsh chemicals.

Third, store it properly. Try to keep each piece in a place that is dry and soft, like a jewelry box or pouch, while also keeping other pieces as separated as possible so they don't rub against each other.

Fourth, gently clean it with a soft and dry jewelry cloth. This will remove any oils or moisture from the day. Make sure to not use harsh jewelry cleaners or chemicals, as this can begin to remove plating.
