Handmade Jewelry With Meaning

There is something special about handmade jewelry.

Maybe it's knowing that someone actually sat down and made it by hand. Maybe it's the tiny details and variations that make each piece feel a little more personal. Or maybe it's simply knowing that there is a person and a story behind what you're wearing.

I've always loved that about handmade jewelry.

And at Starfish Project, some of our jewelry is handmade—but the story behind it goes much deeper than the jewelry itself.

What Makes Jewelry Handmade?

When you hear “handmade jewelry,” you might picture someone making an entire piece from scratch, starting with loose beads, wire, or stones and turning them into a finished necklace or bracelet.

Sometimes that's exactly what handmade means.

At Starfish Project, women develop jewelry-making skills as some of their first steps to freedom when they join. You'll find hand-beaded bracelets, necklaces, and other accessories throughout our collections.

Our Give Hope Beaded Bracelet, for example, is hand-beaded and features a mother-of-pearl heart engraved with “Give Hope.”

And I love that the finished bracelet is beautiful—but I love even more that there is a woman behind those beads who has learned a skill, gained employment, grown in confidence, and is building her career.

That's the part you can't see just by looking at the jewelry.

But Handmade Isn't the Whole Story

Here's something else I think is important to understand about Starfish Project jewelry:

Not every piece is handmade from start to finish.

And that's okay.

Because our goal has never been to make every piece of jewelry completely by hand.

Our goal is to create meaningful employment and opportunities for women to build careers.

That can look different for different women.

Some women work on our production team, assembling jewelry from individual components. Others work in product development, sourcing, photography, design, accounting, shipping, customer service, or other areas of our business.

For example, we work with fair trade factories to source some of our components and jewelry pieces, including some of our chains. Women at Starfish Project are involved in product development and sourcing, helping select materials and develop the pieces we bring to life.

Then women on our production team assemble those components to create the finished jewelry.

So while a particular necklace may not have been made completely from scratch by one person, there are still women behind that necklace whose skills, creativity, decisions, and work helped bring it to you.

And honestly, I think that's pretty amazing.

A Little Starfish Project History You Might Not Know

Did you know that when Starfish Project began over 20 years ago, fair trade factories in East Asia were not really a thing?

This is one of my favorite pieces of Starfish Project history.

When we first began working with women who had escaped trafficking and exploitation, we needed somewhere to source materials and produce jewelry that aligned with the kind of work environment we wanted to create.

So we didn't just train the women in our program to source materials for jewelry making. We learned fair trade factory practices, taught the women in our program and they taught the factories! We helped them develop the practices needed to become fairtrade certified so that we could work with them as a fairtrade business.

I love stories like this because they remind me that impact rarely stops where you expect it to.

You might think the impact of a Starfish Project purchase is simply that a woman gets a job.

And yes, that matters enormously.

But sometimes that job leads to new skills. Those skills lead to new opportunities. Those opportunities influence other people and businesses. And suddenly the ripple is much bigger than the original purchase.

I find that incredibly inspiring.

Because our impact can ripple farther than we can see or expect.

What Does “Wear Hope, Give Hope” Mean?

Wear Hope, Give Hope isn't just the name of a bracelet.

It's the Starfish Project tagline.

It's a call to action.

It's a shared mission.

And it's a shared hope.

When you wear Starfish Project jewelry, you're wearing hope—and you're sharing that hope with the women at Starfish Project and with the women we meet through our outreach.

But we believe hope works both ways.

The women in our program have experienced incredible change in their own lives. They are building careers, learning new skills, establishing independence, and creating new chapters.

And when they share their stories with you, we hope they are sharing their hope with you, too.

Maybe you're going through a difficult season.

Maybe you need a reminder that your current circumstances don't have to define your future.

Maybe you simply need to be reminded that something new is possible.

When you see the stories of women who have built new lives after exploitation, we hope you're reminded that a new story is possible for you, too.

That's what we mean when we say:

Wear Hope. Give Hope.

Why Handmade Jewelry Feels Different

I think handmade jewelry carries a little something extra because you can imagine the hands behind it.

Someone sat down and worked with those beads.

Someone learned how to create something beautiful.

Someone practiced until she got better. (Read XiXi’s Story of learning to make jewelry.)

Someone earned a paycheck from the work she did.

And eventually, that piece traveled across the world and ended up in your hands.

There's something pretty amazing about that connection.

Someone in Asia made something.

Someone somewhere else chose to wear it.

And between those two people is a story of work, courage, opportunity, and hope.

That's why I don't think handmade jewelry is really just about how something was made.

It's about the story of the people behind it.

Jewelry With Meaning

Of course, we want our jewelry to be beautiful.

We want you to love the color, the shape, the details, and the way it looks with your favorite outfit.

But we also love knowing that there's more to it.

A bracelet can be a bracelet.

A necklace can be a necklace.

Or they can become a reminder.

Of a person.

A place.

A season of your life.

A promise you made to yourself.

Or a story of hope you want to carry with you.

And when that jewelry also represents meaningful employment and an opportunity for a woman to build a new future, the story gets a little bigger.

The impact doesn't stop when your package arrives.

It keeps going.

From the woman who learned the skill.

To the woman who helped design or source the piece.

To the person who created the finished jewelry.

To the person who purchases it.

To the person who wears it.

That's the ripple.

And honestly, I think that's pretty beautiful.

Wear Hope. Give Hope.
