Moonstone Ring Buying Guide: How to Choose the One You'll Love

Today I am writing to let you know that I think moonstone jewelry might just be one of the best types of jewelry to gift.

Personally, I am completely captivated by moonstone.

I know, I know. I work at Starfish Project, so I'm probably not supposed to have a favorite. But hear me out...

It's the glow.

Moonstone has this soft, shifting shimmer that changes as the light moves across it. Sometimes it looks almost white. Sometimes you catch these beautiful little flashes of blue. And somehow, it seems to pick up the colors of whatever you're wearing.

It's just...captivating.

And the more I wear it, the more convinced I am that moonstone is one of the most versatile stones you can have in your jewelry collection, making it the perfect gift! (It helps that I have some experience gifting moonstone, too!)

It can feel feminine and ethereal, a little vintage, or completely modern depending on the setting. It looks beautiful with gold. It looks beautiful with silver. And it somehow works whether you're wearing jeans and a sweater or getting dressed up for a night out.

So if you're thinking about buying a moonstone ring for yourself or a friend, consider this your very unofficial moonstone ring buying guide. Let me tell you what I love about them—and what I'd look for when choosing one.

What Makes Moonstone So Special?

Let's start with the obvious: that glow.

If you've ever moved a moonstone around in the light, you know exactly what I mean.

The stone seems to come alive as you move it. You get this soft, floating shimmer across the surface, sometimes with those gorgeous blue or white flashes.

There's actually a gemstone term for this effect: adularescence.

Which is a very fancy word for something I would much rather describe as that beautiful moonstone glow.

And honestly, I think that's what gives moonstone its magic.

To me, it has this ethereal quality that feels feminine without being overly delicate. It also has a little bit of a vintage feeling, which I personally love.

I am always drawn to vintage or vintage-inspired details in jewelry and clothing. Give me something with a beautiful little detail that looks like it could have belonged to someone 50 years ago, has a dramatic love story attached to it, and I'm probably going to love it.

Moonstone has that feeling for me.

What Should You Look for When Buying a Moonstone Ring?

If you're shopping for a moonstone ring, I don't think you need to overcomplicate it.

Start with the thing that made you fall in love with moonstone in the first place: the stone itself.

Look for the glow

Move the ring around in the light.

What do you see?

A beautiful moonstone will have that luminous quality that makes the stone feel like it's glowing from within. You may also see blue or white flashes depending on the stone and the light.

And that's part of what makes moonstone so fun.

It doesn't look exactly the same from every angle.

Pay attention to the setting

The setting can completely change the personality of a moonstone ring, which is why there are so many different moonstone ring styles to choose from.

A simple setting can make it feel clean and modern.

A detailed setting can bring out that romantic, vintage-inspired side of moonstone.

Personally?

I'm going for the details every time.

I love a ring that feels delicate and special but isn't so fancy that you feel like you need somewhere important to go before you can wear it.

Give me everyday fancy.

Think about the metal

This is another reason I love moonstone.

It plays beautifully with both warm and cool metals.

Gold makes moonstone feel warm, romantic, and a little more vintage.

Silver or white gold gives it a cooler, softer, more ethereal look.

And if you're someone who likes both gold and silver, moonstone gives you plenty of options.

Think about how you'll actually wear it

Because here's the thing: a beautiful ring is great.

A beautiful ring that you reach for constantly is even better. If you're looking for a moonstone ring for everyday wear, think about how it fits with the jewelry you already love.

Think about your everyday jewelry. Do you stack your rings? Do you mix metals? Do you mostly wear gold? Are you a silver girl?

And if you're buying a ring as a gift, an adjustable moonstone ring can be especially nice when you're not completely sure about someone's ring size.

Why I Think Moonstone Is So Versatile

This might actually be my favorite thing about moonstone.

It just goes with everything.

I recently saw a friend wearing a moonstone ring I had gifted her, and she had paired it with pearls, a stack of gold bracelets, jeans, and a sweater.

It was gorgeous.

And it didn't look like she had sat there trying to figure out how to style it. It just worked.

That's what I love about a really versatile piece of jewelry.

You can wear it with your favorite sweater and jeans. You can wear it with a dress. You can stack it with other rings. You can pair it with pearls. You can wear it with gold or silver.

It becomes part of your jewelry collection instead of dictating the rest of your outfit.

And I think that's why I find myself gifting moonstone so often.

Gold or Silver? This Is Where I Get Stuck.

Starfish Project now has two moonstone rings, and I genuinely have a hard time deciding which one I like better.

The Starlight Moonstone Ring

The Starlight Moonstone Ring is the one I've been gifting for the past year.

It has a beautiful glowing moonstone surrounded by star and moon details, set in a warm gold finish. The adjustable band makes it easy to wear and especially easy to gift.

Everyone I gift it to (and there might be more than a few) loves this ring. Every. Time.

I've seen women of different ages and completely different personal styles put it on and immediately fall for it.

I think that's because it hits that sweet spot between special and wearable.

It's feminine. It's a little bit vintage. It's celestial without being over-the-top.

And that moonstone glow?

Yep. Still obsessed.

Meet the New Lunar Crest Moonstone Ring

And now I have a new problem.

We have just launched the Lunar Crest Moonstone Ring, and I am already excited about all the people I'm going to give it to.

This one has a white gold-plated brass finish, so it has that beautiful silver-toned look I love. And of course, like all Starfish Project rings, it's adjustable, making it easy for gifting.

It features a natural moonstone with a soft blue-and-white flash, and the detailed setting gives it that same delicate, vintage-inspired feeling.

But this one feels a little cooler and more ethereal.

And I love that it pairs beautifully with silver jewelry and can be stacked with other pieces.

Oh—and it has matching earrings.

So apparently I now have a whole new gifting problem. (Thank you, Jenny and the design team, for the new perfect Christmas present!)

The Magic I See in Moonstone

Some people see magic in the stone.

I get it.

There is something almost magical about the way moonstone catches the light.

But personally, when I think about magic, I think about something else.

Safe work. Opportunity. Career opportunities.

These beautiful stones are lovely. I could probably talk about the glow of moonstone all day. Could I write a song? I might be able to write a song…

But the real magic is what happens when a woman has the opportunity to build a future on her own terms.

That's the heart of every piece of jewelry at Starfish Project.

Our jewelry creates opportunities for survivors of human trafficking and exploitation to experience safe employment, develop careers, build independence, and create a future for themselves.

So yes, I think moonstone is magical.

But that's the kind of magic I really believe in.

How to Style a Moonstone Ring

Honestly?

Have fun with it.

That's one of the reasons I love moonstone so much. It doesn't feel like a stone you have to style correctly.

Try it with:

  • A stack of gold bracelets

  • Pearls

  • Silver rings

  • Mixed metals

  • Other vintage-inspired jewelry

  • Your favorite everyday pieces

Or just wear it on its own.

Sometimes a beautiful moonstone ring doesn't need any help.

A Little Moonstone Care

There is one practical thing worth knowing when you're shopping for a moonstone ring: moonstone is a relatively soft gemstone, so it deserves a little extra care.

I'd take your ring off for activities where it could get knocked around, and I'd keep it away from harsh chemicals and unnecessary impact.

Basically, enjoy it—but maybe don't wear your favorite moonstone ring while moving furniture or swimming in the ocean.

Your ring has done nothing to deserve that kind of treatment. 😂

So... Which Moonstone Ring Should You Choose?

This is where I leave you with the same dilemma I'm facing.

The Starlight Moonstone Ring is warm, romantic, celestial, and gold.

The Lunar Crest Moonstone Ring is cool, ethereal, silver-toned, and beautifully detailed.

And I genuinely don't know which one I'd choose.

The Starlight has been one of my favorite gifts for the past year. I love seeing how differently different women wear it—and how delighted they are when they receive it.

But I can't wait to start gifting the Lunar Crest this holiday season (with the matching earrings!).

So maybe you can help me solve my problem.

Which one is your favorite?

Gold and celestial?

Or silver and ethereal?

Personally, I'm still deciding.

Moonstone Ring FAQs

What is special about a moonstone ring?

Moonstone is known for its soft, luminous glow and the flashes of blue or white that can appear as the stone catches the light. Its ethereal look makes it surprisingly versatile.

What should I look for when buying a moonstone ring?

Start with the stone's appearance. Look for the glow and shimmer that make moonstone special, then consider the setting, metal, fit, and how the ring fits into your everyday style.

Is moonstone good for everyday wear?

Moonstone can be worn regularly with appropriate care, but it is a relatively soft gemstone. It's best to protect it from hard impacts, harsh chemicals, and activities that could scratch or damage the stone.

Does moonstone look better with gold or silver?

That's completely personal! Gold gives moonstone a warmer, more romantic look, while silver and white gold create a cooler, more ethereal feeling.

Can you stack a moonstone ring?

Absolutely. Moonstone looks beautiful with simple bands, other rings, pearls, and vintage-inspired pieces. You can also mix metals if that's your style.

Is a moonstone ring a good gift?

I certainly think so. Moonstone has a versatile look that works across many different personal styles, and an adjustable moonstone ring can make gifting easier when you're unsure of someone's ring size.
