At Starfish Project, our jewelry is created with luminous freshwater pearls and soft, iridescent mother of pearl.
What is the meaning behind pearls?
The meaning behind pearl jewelry is often connected to strength, resilience, and one-of-a-kind beauty. Unlike other materials and stones that require cutting before use in jewelry, pearls are fully formed, white, luminous, and pure when they are picked for jewelry-making.
The process of irritation and refinement that a pearl undergoes to form brings a unique meaning to its use at Starfish Project. The pearls used to form beautiful pieces of jewelry reflect the resiliency and perseverance of the women who create them, showing strength in their journeys. How do I take care of pearl jewelry?
Freshwater pearls
-
Golden rule: Put them on last! Apply makeup, perfume, and any other products you need to get ready, then add your pearl jewelry as the luminous finishing touch.
-
Avoid Water: Avoid swimming, showering, or submerging your pearls in water or moisture. It is best practice to wipe off with a clean, soft cloth after each wear, especially if they have made contact with water or extra moisture.
-
Wear Often: pearls benefit from the natural oils your body creates. In order to maintain that beautiful luster, make sure you wear your jewelry regularly so they don’t crack, dehydrate, or discolor.

Mother of Pearl
-
Golden rule: The golden rule of jewelry applies here too! Apply all products, lotions, and makeup before donning your beautiful mother of pearl jewelry.
-
Cleaning: Wipe with a clean, soft, microfiber cloth to remove excess oils, dirt, and sweat.
-
Storage: Store your mother of pearl jewelry separately in a soft cloth or separate compartment to avoid scratches or buffing from other jewelry. Mother of Pearl is very low on the hardness scale, so it requires extra attention to avoid scratching.
